If you can endure yet one more post about our little getaway, I will wrap-up today. 😉 We were able to visit, and stay, in both Grand Haven and Petoskey. Both of these gems are along Lake MI. Adding to the charm was the fact that we literally experienced Michigan resort weather of sunny skies and mild temperatures. Grand Haven, a sweet little spot, is home to two lighthouses (actually pier lights) and a Coast Guard Station.
We were able to stay right beside the lighthouses which was a pleasant treat. The state park (which includes a public beach) and the boardwalk areas are well maintained and very attractive.
We walked the boardwalk all the way to the downtown area where there are multiple eateries. This also allowed us to take advantage of the nightly show at Grand Haven Musical Fountain. Throughout the summertime, for over 55 years, an evening performance draws many visitors to enjoy the synchronized water and light show with musical accompaniment. When I referenced the schedule as I planned this trip, it made me smile to see that the theme for the evening that we would be attendance was "Christmas in July". Is that perfect, or what?! Pictures do not do justice to this experience, but here are a couple of shots. It was a wonderful way to enjoy a (chilly) summer evening!
Until the late 1990s, this was the largest water fountain in the United States. It now comes in second to one in Las Vegas. Showtimes are adjusted throughout the season to coincide with nightfall. Ours began at 10:10 and lasted about 20 minutes. The next day we made our way north to Petoskey.
Another terrific spot, this area sits on Little Traverse Bay. Its downtown area is lovely. Of course, we had to get a famous Petoskey stone while in the area! Both a rock and a fossil, they are made of fossilized coral. Although it's reported that they can be discovered on area beaches, we purchased our polished stone at a downtown shop.
My cousin and her husband were in Petoskey for a conference and so the four of us were able to spend time together, which was fun. They took us on a short drive to the nearby town of Charlevoix. While poking around there, we were able to see the marina and lighthouse (pier light).
This sunset picture seems a fitting closing. With anticipation, we looked forward to taking-in a glorious setting sun over the water to enjoy our last night. We were disappointed when a thick cloud cover dashed our hopes...until a slit opened and allowed this lovely ending to a happy getaway.
We fell in love with the state of Michigan years ago and highly recommend it as a destination. How about you? Have you been there?
Have a blessed day!
