While on our "American journey" road trip, we had the opportunity to spend time in the charming Amish community of Shipshewana (IN). It was enchanting to see their farms and shops and delightful to shop and eat among their families and even to share the roads with their horses and buggies. While it was interesting to observe these "plain people" living their ordinary lives, it was also necessary to show respect and for that reason I did not photograph any of them, their homes, farms or horses. I did ask permission to take exterior pictures of this wonderful quilt shop.
I loved seeing their barn quilts (shown above) all over the countryside.
On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from May through October, there is a large flea market there in town. Plant material, produce, antiques, kitchen tools, décor, clothing and just about anything else you'd ever want to find is available. My cousin spent the day with us and the three of us had a lovely time in Shipshewana and did snoop around the flea market for a bit.
No visit to Shipshewana would be complete without enjoying tasty Amish food and we had a fabulous meal at The Blue Gate.
If you ever find yourself wandering the roads of northern Indiana, I would highly recommend a stop in Shipshewana. You'll love the tranquility it provides and the peace you'll feel!
