Here's the Dirt...

After a week of rains, everything is looking greener and perkier. The roses, back-eyed Susans, salvia and sunflowers have benefitted from the recent storms.

Even though we water daily, God's "irrigation" can't be replicated.  Remember our science classes about atmospheric nitrogen and its relationship to plants and animals? We do know that most of our air is comprised of nitrogen, but plants can only obtain it from the soil. During a storm the lightning separates the nitrogen atoms. Once that happens, the atoms then fall to the earth with the rain and combine with other minerals in the soil to make fertilizer. The plants need the nitrogen for their photosynthesis process, which produces chlorophyll and that, of course,  makes plants green. So, the plants really do get a post-storm boost from the soil...and that's the dirt!

(Sorry that I sound like I am in the classroom. My first graders used to love to learn about this and especially adored learning and using the words "photosynthesis" and "chlorophyll"!)

Even the volunteer snapdragons and moss rose are happy!

Take a little time to enjoy some flowers this weekend and pick a few. I always have at least a small bouquet of color in the kitchen and it's a happy thing. We all need happy things this morning. I'm sure you're joining me in prayer for the fallen police officers who were senselessly killed and injured last night. Our nation needs a healing. That's a post for another day, though...
