I find it self-satisfying to upcycle things.
Earlier this summer, we happened upon an 18 piece nativity set (plus the stable) at a yard sale.
Based on the color combinations, I would imagine that it was originally created
in the 80s. I think people were more likely to work with ceramics back then,
too. When I saw it all set-up on a table, I began imagining its potential.
Equipped with just some gold spray paint and an old can of walnut stain, the
nativity went from this...
Can you see the bronze look?
You can achieve this finish relatively
easily. First, you spray your piece with gold. When it is dry, dip a soft cotton
cloth (I cut-up old T-shirts) in walnut stain which has been well stirred. Lightly daub and wipe the figure. It's
amazing to see how the crevices and textures come alive with a little stain. It
will likely take two stain coats and the toughest part is waiting until it is thoroughly dried before doing a second
application. If it feels at all sticky to the touch, it's best to allow it to
sit another day.
You can use this technique for any figurine you
have sitting about to give it a new look!
