In preparation for the flooring guys (who began the job this morning), I've been moving stuffing closet contents into other places for several days. In the process, I came across my vintage postcard collection, so I decided to have a "show and tell" today. I acquired most of the postcards many years ago from my mother-in-law, who got them from her mother. She let me sort through a boxful and I selected one postcard to represent each holiday. I carefully top-mounted them and displayed them in a frame. I had the collection hanging for a long time, but took it down a few years ago when I changed things around.
The little flap at the bottom of the card is actually a miniature calendar for the year 1912. Isn't that amazing? Isn't it even more amazing that it was actually sent through the mail like that?!
Most of these are postmarked between 1911 and 1920. The only two "impostors" are the ones depicting Ground Hog Day and Halloween. Admiring the pretty pictures on the front is only half the fun. Seeing the short messages, in perfect penmanship, and the old postage stamps is also enjoyable! In this age of social media, I love the thought of these daily, personalized cards. I still enjoy picking up postcards on trips and, even at that, they are becomming less common. Anymore, I only receive postcards from Aunt Kay when she goes on a trip and from the dentist to remind us of our appointments! When is the last time you sent a postcard to someone?
